Embossed Chipboard

Hi Ladies today I wanted to share with you a quick tutorial so you can jazz up all your chipboard projects. I love chipboard and using ink to alter the color but sometimes I want more then just the sold color so I tried something different, embossing on chipboard and then adding color.

It's actually pretty easy so lets get started. These are supplies you'll need.

chipboard shape
embossing powder (I used white but you can use any color really)
versamark ink
heat tool
pigment ink, it provides the best coverage
a stamp of the image you want on your chipboard
tissue

The first thing you'll want to do is ink your stamp with versamark ink. I normally ink the whole stamp even though it's much larger then the surface I am stamping, I do this because I think it's easier to ensure I get a nice stamped image all over my chipboard.

Once you have your image stamped on your chip board you want to act quickly and add the embossing powder. You don't need to rush too fast but versamark does dry it's left to long so be sure to have your embossing powder at your finger tips.

Add a liberal amount of embossing powder, don't worry it won't go to waste just make sure you do it on a spare piece of paper so you can put the left over back into the container for next time.

Once you have covered your chipboard with embossing powder shack off the rest put it so it doesn't blow all over...that can be one big mess! Using your heat tool and watch the magic happen before your eyes. TIP: I always burn my fingers when I use my heat tool or my chipboard pieces fly away so I use a pen or a stylus to make sure my chipboard stays put and I don't have to burn my fingers.

Once you have heated your embossing powder it's time to start adding color. I strongly recommend pigment ink it will provide better coverage than a water-based ink. Start applying the ink to the chipboard surface and slowly you will see the transformation. You may need to go over the surface a couple of times but it really depends what color you are using and how saturated you want the color. Oh and don't for get to ink the edges or your chipboard it provides a more "finished" look on your finished project.

Last step, take a tissue and whip off the extra ink that may be sitting on top of your embossed surfaces. You can skip this step but sometimes depending again on the color you use the color of your embossing will be compromised and will pick up some of the ink. To avoid this just quick whip the extra ink off your chipboard and it will brighten up your embossing again.

There you have it, embossed chipboard! I hope you try this out. It is a really easy technique but you can create a number of really cool custom embellishments if you just have some fun with it.

Here is how I used this heart on a scrapbook layout. I added a ribbon across the heart to cover the hole in the top corner.

Layers and chipboard and mists, oh my!

I am a huge admirer of the new trend to layer embellishments. Adding extra details to a single element creates visual interest without clutter.
Two people who do this well are Nicole Magouirk and Allison Davis who does incredible sketches as well.
So I set out to create lots of layers on the cover of this Valentines mini album and I challenge you to create layers on your next LO or card or project too! Oh, and Valentines is next week: have you created a Valentines for a sweetie in your life? This album is for my daughter Katie.

Cast of Characters
1. Jenni Bowlin mini album. I cut a piece of white cardstock to fit over so that if I messed up I could start all over!
2. Maya Road chipboard "key chain", consisting of word "love", scalloped heart, arrow, and oval tag
3. Mists: Mr. Huey's white and classic calico, and Tattered Angels chalkboard pink
4. patterned paper, brads, various letter stickers

Base Layer: mask/mist

1. Chipboard shapes make GREAT masks. I had already misted this scalloped circle, and goofed, so instead I used temporary adhesive to stick it to my background, and misted over the whole thing. (See how I covered the hole in the chipboard so the mist wouldn't go thru? Yeah, I *almost* forgot that!)

2. Get thyself a "misting box"! I have this Ott light box that was already open at the top and part of one side - I can easily prop things up in it and mist away without making a mess.

3. Add paint/mist splatters to create added dimension. This is a trend with all the scrapbook designers - don't know who started it, but they are brilliant! You can either play with your squirt bottle to get the right spray, or you can just spray through your hand and let drops fall off your fingers onto your project. I took the 2nd approach.

Chipboard/shape layer

1. Cover your chipboard shape with patterned paper, but first go around your shape with ink (I love chalk ink). The edge does not have to be pretty because most of it will be covered, but it adds a finished look to your piece.

2. Brads can be added right through the chipboard, just use a paper piercer or your scissors to push a hole through. This keeps the brad from making "bumpies" in your paper.

3. Baker's Twine is another hot commodity. Wrap it around your chipboard and don't worry about tying it...just take a scrap of paper, cover it with glue/adhesive, and put it over the loose ends on the back of the chipboard.

Now just add your layered chipboard to your misted background, and add letter stickers and a rub on (as I did in the bottom left) and be happy with your work!

Other Elements: more layers
Mist and splatter other chipboard shapes, add paper or letter stickers, and dangle from the binder rings holding your cover together. While they add depth and intricacy to your art, they are easily moved right out of the way so you can still easily see the actual cover and title.

This week is all about tiny type.

I am a BIG fan of tiny type.

...But there are times you cannot get quite the right colour for what you are creating...enter the label maker! That little gem of a tool will accept paper instead of the plastic label rolls you usually use. And there is a variety of paper types you can use...core'dinations, white core card stock...even patterned paper!

Oh the possibilities!!

So how you say????

step 1:

gather your supplies: you will need your paper choice, a knife/scissors, ruler, label maker, fine/med sandpaper

step 2:

cut a paper strip that is the same width as the plastic label roll that comes with your label maker (@ 3/8")

step 3:

use your fingers to curl the paper so it will fit in the label maker without kinking

step 4:

push the end of the paper into the label maker the same way you would the plastic label roll. When you push the paper into the label maker keep going until you can see the edge of the paper at the 'exit' end of the label maker. Gently curl the ribbon into a circle so it fits inside the label maker and snap the lid closed.

step 5:

type out your words like you normally would with the label maker

step 6:

using a fine to medium fine grade sandpaper gently sand the top of the letters. You will start to see the core colour showing through.

Presto- you are done and have some customized tiny type!! You can leave it as a strip or cut it up.

Design Team Tuesday ~ hot pockets

Welcome to another design team Tuesday,

Today I wanted to share with you something that can help you get more photos on your layouts, work well for beginners and seasoned scrap- bookers alike and can even help you scrapbook faster.
I know your thinking, ya right, but it's true.
Divided page protectors or pocket pages like these from We R Memory Keepers.....

So how do they help you scrapbook faster?

Well the page design is already laid out for you and the divided pockets mean you can simply slip in photos without even cropping them. (if you choose pages with 4x6 pockets). Check out this layout I created.....

In record time this 2 page spread has 8 4x6 photos, lots of journaling, a title and decorative elements. Everything that my regular layouts contain, but faster.

Now a little tip that might help...think of the pockets as mini layouts. Meaning you can add anything to a pocket just like a full 12x12 layout. I even added some embellishments right on top of my photos.

One more cool thing about these hot pockets is that a company called Simple Stories makes papers to match the size and configuration of the We R Memory keepers pocket pages.
Here is a sample (an older line) from the Simple Stories blog....keep in mind these papers can also be cut up and used on your 12x12 pages too.

Design Team Tuesday - Copic

Toady I wanted to talk about Copic Markers. I have always been amazed by these markers, there are some absolutely stunning layouts and cards made using Copics, they aren't difficult to spot. Even though these markers amaze me they also terrify me! They are intimidating, well at least I think so, there are just so many of them and I don't get how they really work.... I don't know where to start!

The other day I was in The Scrapping Bug and stumbled upon a Copic project that was actually a class back before Christmas. I also saw some of the new projects for upcoming classes and it got me thinking and I wanted to know more. I wanted to share a couple of video's that I stubbled across in my research.

Both these videos were done by Lain Ehmann who is a Copic Certified Designer and she answered number of questions I have had.

This next video, also done by Lain Ehmann is a basic tutorial of how to use the Copic markers. She makes it look so easy.

Did you know you can even alter rhinestones and pearls to make them the prefect colour for your layouts or cards. These markers work magic!

After checking out these videos and some other's I am pumped to try these Copic markers. If you are interested in trying it out as well you are in luck! The Scrapping Bug has four upcoming Copic classes available for us to check out! They are offering a Black Red and White Card Class on Feb 9 and Feb 11 and a Brown and Blue Card Class on Feb 23 and Feb 25. If you want more information about these classes such as time and supplies needed check the Calendar or speak with one of the ladies at the store.

The new Sew Stamper by We R Memory Keepers is in the house! It works like the Sew Easy but with- out the sewing. The ink is inside each of the interchangeable heads so you don't get dirty when you want to change the stitch, just twist and remove. Flip back the cover and your ready to roll!

Design Team Tuesday ~ Quick & easy gift card holder

Hey there lady bugs!

This weeks tutorial is for those gift cards you might be giving
away this Christmas. I have been seeing these on the web
and thought I would share with you.
These are quick and easy I promise.

Here's a sample of what you can make today

You will need one heavy weight pattern paper or cardstock and one pattern paper.

A sentiment stamp or a design cut from pattern paper.
Sticky tape, paper trimmer, adhesive and a scoring tool.

Step 1: Cut your gift card wallet (base) @ 4 1/4"x10"

Step 2: Score this strip @ 3", 4", 5" and 8"

Step 3: Fold your score lines making sure to create a "w" shape with

score lines 3", 4" & 5" as shown below (peaks & valleys)

Step 4: Use a strong adhesive like sticky tape on one of the valley folds you created

We are making a pocket for the gift card to sit in.

Below you will see how your gift card wallet should look after adhering

the two valley folds together. (close the "w")

Step 5: Cut 1/8" off the top of the inner tab to create the pocket where

your gift card will sit.

Step 6: Using a complementary coloured paper cut a 1"x7" strip

for the band that will keep your gift card wallet closed.

The band will slide on and off the wallet.

Step 7: Score this strip @ 1" and 7" then fold around

card and glue ends together

Step 8: Stamp or cut greeting from pattern paper and glue it to the band ONLY

If you put glue on the back of the entire greeting the recipient will not

be able to slide the band off the gift card wallet.

Here's a look at the finished project.

Shown here are two types of wallets you can make.

The one on the left I used heavy weight pattern paper and

on the right I used cardstock and patter paper.

To make the panels (seen above on right side)

Just cut your pattern paper 1/4" smaller than your base and remember

to cut some for the inside and outside of the gift card holder.

You can see these in person at The Scrapping Bug store.

Hi friends, Today I'm here to share a fun simple ornament. I have been making these ornaments for years but every time I show someone new they always wonder how I did it.... so I am going to share with you how it's done.

Here's a list of supplies!

Your favorite pattern paper
two brads
a paper cutter and
8 inchs of ribbon

First you will want to cut your pattern paper in to 1 inch strips. I cut 4 - 1x12 inch strips. You can cut the strips thinner if you'd like, just be sure not to trim them too thin, I wouldn't go any thinner than 1/4 inch and that's cutting it close.

You will then want to cut the 12 inch strips in half so you have 8 - 6 inch pieces.

Pile all your strips on top of each other and poke a hole at both ends of the strips.

Make sure you have the pattern you'd like to show facing up, then add a brad in both holes.

Then you will want to start gently pulling apart the pieces of paper to form a ball.

Add a piece of string and hang it on your tree or attach it to a gift.

I have also seen this ornament done using photos strips and pattern papers. Maybe you can make a couple of these ornaments to add to your Christmas wrapping or it would even make a great hostess gift for all the holiday party you may have to go to this holiday season.

DT TUESDAY: Baker's Twine Ornaments

I'm all about homemade ornaments and cards, and I love finding uses for my supplies other than my scrapbooking, 'cause then I can justify my purchases!

I followed a link to the Martha Stewart site one day, to find myself perusing - and using! - her Christmas decor/decoration ideas. This ornament http://www.marthastewart.com/271500/coiled-wood-veneer-ornament particularly caught my attention because I remember drawing these line art diagrams and colouring them for fun as a child, but Martha's ornament seemed bland.

So I coloured mine up!

Although I change each one and am learning lots as I go, I think they turned out adorably, and I'm making one for all the teachers this year! Like I said above, you can make any different size of scalloped circle.

The essential cast of characters: lightweight chipboard
                                               :scallop circle punch (this one is 3.5", but I love the 2.5 and 2.75" sizes I made too) or die (I had no trouble cutting light chipboard with my quickkutz dies)
                                               : baker's twine
   : hot glue (for decorating later on)

Step 1:
- punch 2 scalloped circles of chipboard and glue these together, just for substance/thickness. I used my ATG to glue them together, but hot glue, white glue/modpodge, or any permanent adhesive would work.

Step 2:
- cover your scalloped circles with paper (punch the same scallop) or paint of choice. For these ones, I was using wood grain paper

- I'm sure you could use ink too - distress ink or stains would be great!
- I really liked the metallic gold and silver paint as a background
- do both sides!

Step 3: string 'er up!
- don't worry - if you mess up, you just unwind your twine and try again. This is a quick process and fun, and you can play with the number of notches you "skip" to change the size of the twine circle your are creating.
- with baker's twine, any colour, start at the "top" of your ornament, leaving a long tail to later tie into the loop for hanging.

FIRST LOOP:
- take your twine from the start/1st notch to the notch 8 scallops past (like going from 12o'clock to 5o'clock), which will be the 9th notch, then up the back of the ornament to hook into the 2nd notch (ie the notch 1 beyond your starting notch)
SECOND LOOP:
- take your twine from the 2nd notch to the 10th notch, then up the back to the 3rd notch

THIRD---END LOOP:
- keep going, moving the winding twine along the notches, until your twine comes up the back of the ornament into the 1st notch again

KNOT:
- tie the 2 ends together, tightly, into the 1st notch. Remember to leave tails to tie the loop from which you will hang your ornament!

Step 4: 2nd colour of twice
If you wish, you can add a 2nd colour of twine overtop of your first for added dimension.
example: For my "joy" ornament, I created a "wider" circle of twine by going notch 1-7, 2-8, 3-9 etc.
example: For my "birdhouse" ornaments, I did a green pentagon by wrapping twine as follows:
              notch 1-6 on the front
              notch 6-11 on the back
              notch 11-16 on the front
              notch 16-21 on the back
              notch 21-1 on the front
              notch 1-6 on the back
              notch 6-11 on the front
notch 11-16 on the back
              notch 16-21 on the front
              notch 21-1 on the back and tie the string.

Step 4: Decorate! Hot Glue is rather essential here.
This is entirely up to you. I am (impatiently) awaiting a Tim Holtz pinecone die to add some pinecones to these. You could even use real pine cones I'm sure!
I used thickers, die cuts, stickers, chipboard shapes, buttons, ribbons, bling, pearls, stickles, stamps... and all sorts of fun embellishments to create different ornaments. And you have 2 sides to play with!

Here is what I pulled out to create my first teacher ornament:
Studio Calico Mr. Hueys inks are great for adding "snow" to your ornaments!

Step 5: Toppers

I found these beads at Michaels, and had some in my stash as well. I used a wide-eye needle to get the bakers twice through the bead, and then tied it. On some, instead of using the twine as my hanging loop, I added ribbon to hang by.

On the top of this one, I added two pearl halves, using hot glue to adhere them to my string. Oh, and these adorable felt adhesive snowflakes are at the Bug now...$1/package of 5...stock up, 'cause I'm going back to buy more!!!

Design Team Tuesday!

Hello Bug Lovers,
Who doesn't love a little confetti!!

Today I'll show you how to make stitched confetti pockets.
These little gems can be used in cards, mini books or my personal favorite- a December Daily album!

Supplies needed:

8x8 page protectors or Collector card holders- those plastic ones that have 9 spaces per page.
needle
Sew Easy floss
pocket goodies- I used beads, felt shapes and words

2 sided paper- I used Simple Stories 25 days of Christmas

step 1: mark and cut the page protector and paper to the size you would like to work with. If this is going in an album allow space for the binding or leave the holes in tact so you can add to an existing album.
(I cut off the holes so I could bind it later and made the width the same as my paper)You should end up with a page protector that is sealed on the binding edge and bottom.

Step 2: sandwich your paper between the page protectors at the top and secure with a clip so it does not move on you.......use your piercing tool make stitch holes on 3 sides. Your binding side will need staggered holes so you can zigzag. ( you can use a sew easy template for this part). You will be piercing through the paper as well.

Step 3: start in the top left and sew around to the top right. You should have the paper sewn in once you are finished.

Step 4: remove your clip and gently open the top. Pour your confetti goodies inside.

Step 5: using your piercing tool make stitch holes across the top of the confetti window, catching the paper again and sew across the top of the window.

Step 6: Enjoy your little bit of whimsy!!!

You can substitute machine sewing for the hand sewing if that is more your style.

Flower folding continued

Using STARS!!
What a great way to decorate your home for that special occasion or just beacuse!

I recently made some folded paper stars with one of my Design Team kits. I am always looking for something new to do with my paper and had seen a string of these stars at a recent craft show. I thought I'd give it go – thinking maybe they might be frustrating. But no- they were quite easy to make!

Supplies:
*Patterned papers or colourful cardstock
*Scoring tool (bone folder, or stylus – I used the side of a pencil!)
*Adhesive
*Buttons, brads, ribbons or glitter if you want to add some design details

Step 1: Cut 5-pointed stars out of paper. I found these templates online if you need them:

If you would like a 2-layered star, cut 2 sizes in coordinating papers.

Step 2: Referring to the following diagram, score a line from the top of each point straight down to the centre of the star. Do this for each of the five points.

Step 3: Fold on each line. First, fold each line with wrong-sides of the paper together, creating a “mountain” effect (folding on the 5 solid lines on the diagram).

Step 4: Then fold the short lines between points in the opposite direction to give your star dimension creating a “valley effect” (folding the dashed lines on the diagram).

Step 5: Create as many little stars as you like! Cute, aren't they?

Step 6: Embellish with glitter, brads or buttons. To create the garland, I punched holes in one point of the star and tied ribbon through the hole. Be sure to make a knot on each star so that your stars do not slide together on the ribbon.

I love this time of the month...it's REVEAL TIME!!
Our super talented design team has been hard at work again this month...and as usual, they never fail to impress and inspire!!

Bronwyn worked her magic on this "boy" line...turning it into a pretty girly masterpiece!

Can you believe that the Star Wars movie made it debut 34 YEARS AGO today??!!
I admit, with two girls, I don't know alot about the characters or the movies (other than Hans Solo...I had a little crush on him when I was younger) but I do know that my girlfriends with sons can pretty much recite the lines of the movies by heart!!
